Matteo Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this year. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to remain there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
